Laura Marling - The Needle And The Damage Done

The video starts off with a low angle shot showing various vintage objects. These type of querky colours and style makes this video unique. This type of style could connote the style of the artist, Laura Marling. A pan shot is then used to establish the setting of the music video which we see as being a vintage old fashioned room. The typography used when we see the words "Laura Marling" "The Needle And The Damage Done" is quite girly flowing writing which links to the style of music that Laura Marling sings. The text is shown in white against the live action pan of the room and then we see it slowly fade to be against the black back, making it stand out. The establishing shot we see of the room shows alot of random objects, I've found that this is a regular thing to see in music videos that follow the "indie" genre (This is something I will think about including when it comes to filming).

The fact that everything in this shot is made of plasticine gives the whole video and scene a child like quality. As we see everything starting to move this gives it an illution of hallucinations which represents how it feels to be involved in drugs which is what the video is about.

The animation motion used when the pictures start to leave the album, this could signifiy the memories being lost and moving away.

We then see a medium shot showing the opposite room and the juxtaposition of the contrast between the bright coloured child like room and the dark dull room that gives off a serious tone. We then see a close up of the needle which is evidently what the music video and song is about. As the needle goes done we see that the other room is changing more, this could represent the change of the person when they are involved with drugs. The close up of the needle shows the audience that it is the other real life object in the whole scene and this could connote the real life and serious feel towards the drugs

As all the objects in the room begin to move we see that the music recorder is still playing through out and this could resemble the happiness and hope that is still there. By the end of the music video we see that everything from the bright original room that was shown at the beginning of the music video has now moved into the dark and worn out room, this could resemble change in the person who has used the drugs that are shown in the video or how drugs can change people in general.

I think this video is interesting and the use of the plasticine makes the video more unique and different to the average music video, however it doesn't really have a narrative and a ending to the film which could make it seem boring, however it could also make the viewer more likely to watch the video more than once in order to pick up more things that could add to the narrative and the ending of the video.
